Japan is always beautiful and such a dreamy place for Filipinos, but during winter, the days are beautifully clear and bright with crisp fresh air. In the winter, steaming bowls of ramen or nabe (hot pot) not only fill you up – they are, after all, sumo wrestlers’ favored supper – but also thaw out even the chilliest of visitors. Before 5 p.m., a mug of matcha is a must, and once the sun sets, nothing beats a hot cup of amazake (sweet rice wine) or sake to keep winter nights warm.
Wrap up warm with plenty of layers, as the Japanese do. Pick up some heat pads, burn your toes under kotatsu (tables with heaters underneath), warm yourself in an onsen (nature’s hot pool), and tuck into winter meals if you’re feeling really chilly.
